Fishing Captain Survives Hurricane

Fishing Boat Captain Survives Hurricane Milton's Wrath

A fishing boat captain endured a life-threatening ordeal after being stranded 30 miles off Florida's west coast in Hurricane Milton's brutal conditions. Found clinging to a cooler, the captain's survival highlights the importance of safety measures during fishing and boating expeditions.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the captain was working to repair his disabled boat when he was overtaken by the storm. With wind speeds between 75-90 mph and waves up to 25 feet, the situation became dire. The captain's use of key marine safety equipment—his life jacket and an emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB)—played a crucial role in his survival.

Rescue Efforts Amid Hurricane Milton

The captain's fishing boat had initially become disabled 20 miles off St. John's Pass, leading to an initial rescue of both him and a crew member. However, the captain returned to the vessel to perform repairs and became stranded again as Hurricane Milton approached. Despite losing contact, rescue crews located him Thursday, clinging to a cooler, 30 miles from Longboat Key. He was safely transported to Tampa General Hospital.

This harrowing event underscores the importance of boating safety, particularly during severe weather. All anglers and boaters should equip their vessels with life jackets, EPIRBs, and check weather conditions before heading out on the water.
